About the Valiant Trooper

The Valiant Trooper is a quintessentially English country pub and restaurant nestled in one of the most picturesque villages in Hertfordshire. Situated at the foot of the Chiltern hills, it's the perfect location for scenic walks and cycling on the Ridgeway or in the nearby National Trust-owned Ashridge forest.  Alternatively, if it's a leisurely stroll you're after, Aldbury has lots to offer from its 13th century church to its duck pond and ancient whipping post and stocks.

The 17th century cottages that comprise the Trooper have served as alehouses for several centuries. The first traceable evidence dates back to 1752 when the pub - then known as The Royal Oak - was left in the will of one John Barnes. Its next owner was Isaac Dell Master, whose initials "ID" and the date "1769" can be seen carved in the brickwork alongside the main front window.

The name changed to The Trooper Alehouse in 1803 - rumoured to be because the Duke of Wellington met his troops here to discuss tactics. It became The Valiant Trooper in 1878.

It is now run by husband and wife team Beej and Beth Parmar, who describe it as "a real pub with a warm welcome, a down-to-earth attitude, excellent customer service and quality food and beer - in a relaxed atmosphere." The Head Chef and his team are renowned for innovative twists on British classics with the emphasis on high quality local and seasonal produce served with the minimum of fuss.  From the traditional menu to the evening specials board, we're talking big flavoured, unpretentious food.

The Valiant Trooper has two cosy bars and a separate 52-cover restaurant. With its open log fires, beamed ceilings and original features, it's always alluring whether you're after a quick pint, a bar snack or a full sit-down meal. It also has a sizeable beer garden which includes a recently installed wooden children's adventure trail. The restaurant is available for private hire for groups or parties. The full menu is served all day every day.

Children are always welcome. There is a home-cooked healthy children's menu or half-sized main menu portions. Baby-changing facilities and highchairs are also available.

If you bring your dog, they are welcome in the bar or beer garden. Ask for dog biscuits or tasty scraps from the kitchen if yours is peckish or needs a treat.  Water bowls are always available in the garden.

Regular events, a great range of specials on the blackboard and fantastic guest ales ensure that there's always a reason to return to the Valiant Trooper, where you'll always get a smile...
